Carefully read the concepts of Pacifism (both Conditional and Absolute), Political Realism, Just War Theory, and Terrorism in this chapter. State which one you think is the morally correct way for a nation or group of people to operate. Substantiate it. With all the profiling and energy around the word “terrorist,” please be very careful not to fall prey to the cultural norms regarding this. Terrorism is not about a particular group. It is a strategy. One of my favorite quotes regarding terrorism:
“Terrorist: what the big army calls the little army”
Yes, it is a wise guy way of saying that both sanctioned war makers and terrorists are extremely similar. I am a pacifist, so this quote really speaks truth for me in a humorous way. And I come from a military family, so I have seen war and its consequences very intimately.
Consider which of the approaches listed above are the most ethical ways for a nation to resolve disputes. Is war ever ethically correct? If so, under what conditions? Terrorism is not traditionally perpetrated by a nation, though look at this definition I got online: “terrorism: the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.” Sounds like that could refer to a nation’s action, could it not?
