Saint Cloud State University Synthesis of Ethical Theory Discussion

Description

We will complete a synthesis of the ethical theory with one of the interlocking features of the pandemic. We will analyze three different pandemics from the list below,

1. Health/healthcare pandemic

2. Racism/Neo-colonialism pandemic

3. Economic pandemic

4. Climate pandemic

Your post should include all five steps.

  1. What’s the problem? Select and post an artifact that symbolizes the complexity of the pandemic we are analyzing in this quarter. An artifact should have some professional weight to it and can include an artistic photo you took, a digital image you found online and edited, a music video, lyrics, an art piece in a gallery, a theatre production, choreographed dance, a ceramics piece, an art installation, or other symbols that capture our cultural Zeitgeist. Tell me why this piece captures well, for you, the complexities of the given pandemic(s). An artifact with the highest point value will push boundaries which may include the artistic medium (print and digital; auditory and visual), the content, or the scope of the idea. All artifacts should be cited crediting the artist, photographer, or website from which all artifacts were extracted. Citations should adhere to an established research style guide such as APA, MLA, or CMS.
  2. They Say. Write or narrate a paragraph answering the question “What the right thing is to do?” from the perspective of one of the ethical theorist’s and their approach from the the quarter we are analyzing. E.g., “A utilitarian like Peter Singer would say the right thing to do given the economic pandemic is X and Y.” You should distinguish a philosopher from the approach you are referencing. In the example, I used Peter Singer as opposed to John Stuart Mill’s or Jeremy Bentham’s who have different versions of utilitarianism. I should be able to understand the philosopher and approach you are explaining. I am looking for citations back to the philosopher so know which works they wrote and be able to locate specific principles. Avoid vague summaries.
  3. I Say. Write or say a paragraph arguing what you say is the right thing to do. Given what you say is the right thing to do, indicate if you are using the same ethical theory from step two to support your position. If not, what ethical theory are you using to support your position?
  4. They Say. Ask someone else what they say is the right thing to do and identify what ethical theory they are using. Indicate the philosopher, what the ethical theory says, and how you know this is the theory that best supports their position.
  5. Mechanics. Your quarter synthesis should total roughly 500-1,000 words or 5-7 minutes of video. If written, check your writing for spelling errors or typos and indicate your word count; if a video, edit to remove “ums” and other distracting features and include at minimum machine-generated captions. Ensure the lighting, sound, and video quality feature your ideas clearly. Both written and video versions should include a full list of all sources (works cited, references, or bibliography). Submit by the quarter due dates to be included in the tapestry of ideas that I will create for each quarter. All late submissions must be posted in the “Late Quarterly Syntheses” topic and you are required to meet with me during a 1-on-1 in order to score your work and ensure you have the requisite understanding to complete on-time work going forward.
